According to a list published by an employer branding company Universum, Google has been ranked as the best company to work for in South Africa.

In the list presented by the global research and advisory firm, Google did not just top the list as the best company to work for‚ it was also the only tech company on the list which was dominated by finance-related sector entities like Investec‚ which was ranked third.

South African Reserve Bank and South African Revenue Service were both listed in the top 10 list along with audit firms Deloitte and KPMG.

Universum noted in a statement that “Today’s businesses operate in a highly competitive employment landscape, and you can gain valuable insight into how your organisation is perceived by tomorrow’s workforce,” the company said.

Universum was able to draw conclusions on ranking the companies from the opinion of 21,961 professionals and students from 30 universities as well as 68 273 employer evaluations.

South African Breweries was beaten by Google in the list as it took second spot while South African Reserve Bank and South African Revenue Service took up the 7th and 9th spots respectively.

Universum South Africa Research Manager Winani Ndlovu pointed out that though South Africans share similarities with their global peers in terms of talent, they also have their unique expectations from their employers.

“Similar to the global talent, the South African business/commerce talent is looking for development evidenced in their selection of professional training and development and leaders who will support their development as part of their top three important attributes.

“Within the engineering/technology talent innovation and a creative and dynamic work environment is similarly part of the top three most important attributes in an employer,” Ndlovu said.

Google was also the most sought-after employer globally.
