Van Niekerk And Semenya Count On SA As Both Get Nominated For International Award


South Africa’s golden boy Wayde van Niekerk and our endearing athlete Semenya Caster have been nominated for the IAAF World Athletes of the Year Award.

The South Africans made the list following their selection by an international panel of athletics experts, which comprised representatives from all six continental areas of the IAAF.

The IAAF Awards is scheduled to hold in Monaco on 2 December 2016. Voters are expected to cast their votes by email, while fans can vote online via the IAAF’s social media platforms.

Organizers of the event disclosed that the IAAF Council’s vote will count for 50% of the result, while the IAAF Family’s votes and the public votes will each count for 25% of the final result.

Additional information says voting closes on 1 November, after which a three-way voting process will determine the finalists. At the conclusion of the voting process, three men and three women finalists will be announced by the IAAF.

Semenya Caster And Van Niekerk Break Record

South African stars, Semenya Caster and Van Niekerk made Mzansi proud at this year’s Olympics. The former won gold in the 800m amid controversies and public outcry about her gender; while the latter smiled back home with gold in the 400m – smashing Michael Johnson’s matchless mark of 43.18sec that had stood since 1999.
