SAPS Apprehend Hijackers After Shoot-out


The South African Police Service (SAPS) said it harvested some group of hijackers at Montclair after a gun-battle.

Five suspects aged between 21 and 34 were arrested after a shoot-out with police and are set to appear before Durban Magistrate Court .

There, they’ll face charges of attempted murder, possession of suspected stolen vehicle, unlicensed firearm and ammunition.

SAPS related that the K9 Unit, Montclair police and Provincial Highway Patrol Unit were conducting crime prevention duties to prevent hijackings and other serious crimes in the area when they decided to followed up information about suspected stolen vehicle.

“The members proceeded to the identified place where they saw the said suspected stolen vehicle. They went inside the premises and when the suspects saw the members, they fled on foot.

The members gave chase and the suspects allegedly started to shoot towards the members and the members retaliated.

One suspect was shot and wounded and all five suspects were arrested,” SAPS narrated.

The vehicle and an unlicensed firearm were recovered. Adding that the firearm will be sent for ballistic tests to establish if it was used in any other crimes in the province, SAPS begged South Africans to keep providing information about any wanted suspects.

Meanwhile, another five suspects were arrested for murder and attempted armed robbery.

SAPS said the suspects attempted to perpetrate a robbery at a jewelry store in a shopping mall in Claremont this morning.

“The suspects entered the store at around 10:00, held staff at gunpoint and smashed a display cabinets when the alarm triggered. In panic, they fled empty-handed and ran into the mall where security personnel managed to apprehend one of the suspects.

Police responded swiftly to the compliant which resulted in the arrest of the other four suspects and the seizure of an illegal firearm,” stated SAPS.

Also, the suspects were found in possession of a stolen VW Polo. The car was traced to a previous incident in Strandfontein where a 39-year-old man was shot and killed during the robbery of his vehicle.
