Political parties and South Africans must stop disturbing the nation with
secretary general said SABC censored ANC as well and that those insinuating the broadcasting corporation is being manipulated by the ruling party are just stirring unnecessary unrest.
Mantashe said: “…SABC sometimes censors us as the ANC and nobody speaks. It doesn’t report on our activities and yet nobody comments. Censorship is a bad thing generally.”
He remarked that the SABC acting CEO Jimi Matthews who resigned the previous week was only putting-up a “holier-than-thou” attitude.
” Nobody has asked Jimi Matthews why he has been a senior person for years and only now he is crying foul for decisions he took. They have been censoring everybody, including the ANC, for years. Matthews says somebody in the ANC was controlling them. Who are these persons?” asked the secretary general.
The Democratic Alliance’s (DA) recent statement on the censorship issue, lashed the ANC Youth League for their ‘Hands off Hlaudi’ statement.
According to the opposition party, “ANCYL’s statement in support of SABC censorship and Hlaudi Motsoeneng’s dictatorial reign over the public broadcaster proves yet again that the ANC doesn’t care about media freedom.
Their ‘Hands off Hlaudi’ statement…is a blatant attack on the freedoms that young South Africans fought and died for during our country’s struggle against Apartheid.
It is equally a slap in the face of our country’s young people, who want to live in a democracy, underpinned by the constitutional principles of equality, freedom and dignity.”
Naming the youth league ‘Zuma’s Defence League’, DA asserted that ANC is behind the SABC problems.
“It is the ANC that put Hlaudi in his position, and it is the ANC that defended him on Black Friday, when journalists protested against censorship. It is the ANC that ultimately wants to keep him as the head of the SABC,” DA pointed out.
