SA Celebs Flood Social Media To Comment On Oscar’s ‘White Privilege’ Sentencing


It only took moments after South African Paralympic Oscar Pistorius sentencing for the murder of girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp for social media to light up with comments.

Few hours ago, Oscar Pistorius was sentenced to six years in prison for the murder of his girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp in 2013. during the sentencing proceeding, Judge Masipa said that outweighing the aggravating factors in the case are the mitigating factors. This led her to deviate from the prescribed sentence for murder.

However, a string of local celebrities have commented on the verdict, showing their disapproval.

few minutes after the judge handed down the sentence, Social Media came alive with comments from entertainment personalities. Most of the comments points to a negative reaction to the decision, while some described it as white privilege.

South African Actress Boity Thulo was one of those who commented as she sarcastically said: “Oscar has been sentenced to white privilege years in prison. Poor guy.”

TV personality Lerato Kganyago was alarmed at the outcome of the sentence. “6 years!!! Ok so he will be out next year! Oh well, that’s what happens when you got money.”

On the other hand, Somizi’s response was stern and to the point. “2 words. Masipa Karma.”

Other celebrities also shared their opinions without mincing words.

Pistorius’s lawyer, Barry Roux, had earlier asked for justice to be tempered with mercy and for the usual minimum sentence to be reduced.

But, state prosecutor, Gerrie Nel maintained that it would be out-of-place to arrive at an appropriate sentence only to turn around and reduce it for the sake of mercy. He maintained that Pistorius sentencing must not get less than 15 years for what he did.
