Rhodes University Drama Requirements

The Rhodes University Drama Department offers students an integrated approach to drama studies incorporating a broad range of disciplines: theatre technology, acting, choreography, directing, applied theatre, movement, physical theatre, theatre design, writing, and arts administration.

Unfortunately, the drama department of the University hasn’t publicly shared the exact requirements for prospective students. You might need to log in to the school’s website and find your way to the part where you’ll get to find the list of all of the school’s departments.

Check for the drama department and see if you can see the list of their requirements. It is also important to note that an audition is not part of the University’s requirements for applicants who wish to study drama.

Rhodes University Law Requirements

Rhodes University offers an LLB degree. Not only that the course is fully accredited, but also it meets the National LLB qualification standards. Hence, all students who graduate with an LLB degree from the University obtain the same qualification.

This is the minimum faculty requirement for those who want to study law at Rhodes university. For additional information, kindly visit the school’s official website or the law faculty of the school.

  • English Home Language – 60% and above
  • English First Additional Language – 70% and above
  • Mathematics – 50% and above
  • Mathematics Literacy – 60% and above

It is important to note that, at Rhodes University, first-year candidates are not accepted directly into law. They are required to obtain three non-law credits through either Commerce, Humanities, or Science Faculties.

Also, a minimum of Maths level 4 or Maths literacy level 5 is required to be considered for law studies.

Note:  Life Orientation is not counted for points, but you must obtain at least 50% for acceptance.

Rhodes University General Requirements

Before we delve into the general requirement at Rhodes university, it is important you get acquainted with the minimum requirement at the school.

So, this is the minimum requirement that indicates that you are eligible for selection.

  • At least four of the seven subjects must be from the list of the recommended subject list set out below, and students must have obtained an achievement rating of 4 (50 – 59%) or above.
  • English language at an achievement rating of 4 (50 – 59%) or above.
  • Meet Faculty requirements:  subject requirements and percentage required.

Here are the general requirements for applicants who wish to study at the University under undergraduate, masters by research, postgraduate, masters by coursework, doctor of philosophy, and Bachelor honors levels.

Rhodes University Undergraduate Degree Requirements

  • You must take seven subjects, four of which are compulsory (two languages, Life Orientation and either Mathematics or Mathematical Literacy) and three of your chosen subjects from the subjects on offer at the school.
  • At least four of the seven subjects must be from the list of ‘designated subjects’ listed below, and the student must have obtained an achievement rating of 4 (adequate achievement 50 – 59%) or above in these four subjects.

The designated subject list includes:

  • Accounting/ Agricultural Science/ Business Studies
  • Consumer Studies/Dramatic Arts/ Engineering Graphics and Design
  • Economics/Geography/ History
  • Information Technology/ Languages/ Life Sciences
  • Music Mathematics/Mathematical Literacy
  • Religion Studies/ Physical Science/ Visual Arts.

Bachelor of Honours Degrees Requirements

  • An appropriate Bachelor’s degree OR
  • Admission to the status of that degree OR
  • Attained a level of competence

The duration is a minimum of at least two consecutive semesters. Except with the permission of the Senate, all modules shall be completed at the University.

Masters by Coursework Requirements

  • A relevant prerequisite degree OR
  • Admission to the status of that degree OR
  • Attained a level of competence

Duration for Master by Coursework is a minimum of two consecutive semesters (full-time) or four consecutive semesters (part-time) before the degree may be conferred. With permission and in terms of College regulations, periods of attendance at the graduate level at another institution or another College may be accepted.

Masters by Research Requirement

  • A relevant prerequisite degree OR
  • Admission to the status of that degree

A minimum of two consecutive semesters (full-time) or four consecutive semesters (part-time) before the degree may be conferred.

Note: Candidates shall be required to pursue an appropriate program of research on a subject on a subject falling within the scope of the studies presented at the University.

Doctor of philosophy or supervised Doctor degrees by research Requirements

  • A relevant prerequisite degree OR
  • Admission to the status of that degree

The duration for this is a minimum of four consecutive semesters (full-time) or eight consecutive semesters (part-time) before the degree may be conferred.

Postgraduate Diplomas Requirements

Here are the requirements for postgraduate students who wish to further their studies at Rhodes University.

  • An appropriate Bachelor’s degree OR
  • Admission to the status of that degree OR
  • Attained a level of competence
  • Some Schools/Colleges may accept an Advanced Diploma for entry into a Postgraduate Diploma if HEQF (Higher Education Qualification Framework) requirements are met.

The duration of postgraduate diploma courses is a minimum of at least two consecutive semesters. However, except with the permission of the Senate, all modules shall be completed at the University.

International Requirements

Here are Rhodes university’s international requirements for interested candidates.

40 points and above will receive a firm offer, and 37 – 39 points will remain on hold until the end of September to be considered by the Dean if space is available.

For candidates who offer A, O, HIGCSE & IGCSE, five different subjects are counted. The basic minimum requirement for admission to the University is a certificate of Full Exemption or Foreign Conditional Exemption from the Matriculation Board.

Applicants who have passed A levels are eligible for full exemption provided the passes in approved subjects meet the following requirements:

  • A-level: symbols A-E (minimum of 2 subjects)
  • AS-level: symbols A-D (4 subjects and 1 at O-level)
  • O-level: symbols A-C (maximum of 3 subjects)
  • At least 2 subjects at A-level and 3 different subjects at O-level or 3 subjects at A-level and 2 at O-level

HIGCSE/IGCSE qualification:

  • HIGCSE: symbols 1-3 (4 subjects)
  • IGCSE: symbols A-C (1 subject)
  • International Baccalaureate (B)
  • 3 High-level (HL) subjects: Grade 4
  • 4 Standard Level (SL) subjects: Grade 5
