A mother who abandoned her newborn baby in a minibus taxi at the Pavilion shopping center two weeks ago is expected to appear in Court on Thursday, 22 December 2016.
This comes after she was arrested by the police on Tuesday for abandoning the helpless baby boy.
Reports had it that the boy was found hidden under the seat of a minibus taxi. The mother was also said to have dropped a note beside him, apologizing and asking for forgiveness for abandoning him.
The note, in isiZulu, read: “I apologize for what I did, please forgive me. There is nothing I can do. The father is denying the baby. I don’t have an ID to apply for a grant because I left it at home in the rural area. Please take good care of the baby or send it to the police.”
The 37-year-old mother, who is expected to make her first appearance at the Pinetown Magistrate’s court today was arrested by officers from the Pinetown Family Violence, Child Protection, and Sexual Offences Unit at Embo township area near Hillcrest.
Police spokesperson Captain Nqobile Gwala also admitted that the officers found it very difficult to find the mother of the baby because she left little or no information about her whereabout in the note.
“From the medication left with the child, the detectives ascertained that the medication was issued at St Mary’s Hospital in Marrianhill. Further investigation at the hospital [showed] she had registered an incomplete residential address and did not leave her cell phone number,” Gwala said.
On the whereabout of the baby, Captain Gwala said the baby is in a very safe place at the moment.
