The South African Post Office (Sapo) issued a warning about a parcel delivery scam dis-encouraging South Africans from attempts to get any parcel when they’re not expecting any.
Sapo stressed that some fraudulent entities have designed a parcel delivery scam to defraud South Africans.
From our gatherings, people are being called by individual claiming to be from the customs division of the SA Post Office. Sapo said: “the caller informs them that a parcel is ready for collection – provided they first pay money into an account.
“According to the caller, the money is for customs duties and courier fees,” Sapo added.
Sapo further disclosed that victims are being directed to a website that is similar to the Speed Services website but with a phone number in the United Kingdom.
Also, the victims are being handed a pin which they have to enter before they can track the fictitious parcel. Sapo specified that it does not use pin numbers for its tracking service.
Divulging that there’s an instance where a member of the public was requested to pay R1500 in courier charges and R2000 in customs fees, Sapo said:
“The SA Post Office does not require customers to make any bank deposit before parcels are released. In instances where SARS levy import tax on parcels from abroad, the import tax must be paid at the Post Office counter when the item is collected. The customer will receive a receipt for this payment.”
More-so, Sapo related that customers will only receive an SMS requesting him/her to collect his/her parcel at a specific Post Office branch when the Post Office has the cellphone number of the recipient.
The SMS will not request that funds be deposited into an account, Sapo emphasized.
Above all, Sapo urged South African who have information about the parcel delivery scam, to call the SA police or the Post Office’s Crime buster Hotline on 0800 020 070.
