Over 50 Sexual Offenders Sentenced to Life Terms In KZN


Not fewer than 50 sexual offenders have been sentenced to life terms in Kwazulu-Natal.

According to SAPS, various Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Units in the province secured 59 convictions for various sexual related cases.

In November this year, a total of 365 suspects were arrested for sexual and other crimes like rape attempted rape, sexual assault, domestic violence, child neglect, attempted murder, house robbery and contravening of the protection order.

Highlighting that the accused were convicted by various courts in the province after they were found guilty of sexual related offences, SAPS stated:

“Nine life term imprisonments were handed to the convicted accused and a total of 550 years in jail.”

Commenting, KwaZulu-Natal Acting Provincial Commissioner, Major General Bheki Langa welcomed the convictions and promised that more work will be done in order to send sexual offenders to jail.

“These sentences prove that our units will make sure that all the sexual offenders are locked behind the bars for a very long time,” he said.

Meanwhile, five men were fatally wounded during a shootout with Durban Hawks members.

The shootout happened at the N2 freeway between Port Shepstone and Shelly Beach

SAPS related that the Hawks members involved in the shootout were following up information about a dangerous group of armed robbers travelling in a vehicle from the Eastern Cape and heading towards Durban.

The driver of the vehicle reportedly ignored warnings to stop. And with that, the occupants opened fire on the members. That, resulted into a shootout and a high speed chase.

“Shortly after, the suspects’ vehicle came to a standstill and all the five suspects were declared dead.

“The five suspects have been positively linked to two cases murder and robbery in Mpumalanga and Marian Hill (Durban).

“One assault rifle (AK47) and two unlicensed 9mm pistols , several cell phones and undisclosed amount of cash were confiscated,” narrated SAPS.
