The Verdict Is In! Pistorius Gets 6 Years Behind Bars For The Murder Of Reeva Steenkamp


South African Paralympic athlete Oscar Pistorius has been sentenced to six years in prison for the murder of his girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp in 2013.

Pistorius arrived at a South African court to hear the verdict from Judge Thokozile Masipa on Wednesday.

Judge Masipa said that outweighing the aggravating factors in the case are the mitigating factors which made her deviate from the prescribed sentence for murder.

The world’s most famous Paralympic athlete Oscar Pistorius has finally faced the last chapter of an unfortunate twist of fate that began on that fateful February morning in 2013. Pistorius fired four bullets through his bathroom door, killing Steenkamp on valentine’s day.

According to Pistorius, he mistook his girlfriend for an intruder who might harm him when he took the shots. But, the prosecution said Pistorius had a history of violence, and that he intentionally murdered his lover after a late-night argument.

The former Paralympic athlete already served one year in jail after the High Court in Pretoria found him guilty of culpable homicide. However, the appeal court overturned the finding last year and convicted him of murder of which he has been undergoing trial.

during court proceedings, Oscar Pistorius was found guilty of murdering his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp after the Supreme Court of Appeal revoked his culpable homicide conviction.

Pistorius’s lawyer, Barry Roux, had earlier asked for justice to be tempered with mercy and for the usual minimum sentence to be reduced. But, state prosecutor, Gerrie Nel maintained that it would be out-of-place to arrive at an appropriate sentence only to turn around and reduce it for the sake of mercy.

He insisted that the final judgment should be centered around the effects the victims suffered at the time of the crime, reflecting the seriousness of the crime and the effect it had on the public.

The state prosecutor added that the sentence should also serve as a warning for anyone thinking of carrying out such crime

No one will ever know what really transpired between Oscar Pistorius and his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp on Valentine’s day in 2013.
