Operation Paseka Nabs Man For Raping A Woman In A Taxi


A taxi driver accused of raping a young woman in a taxi about three months ago has been arrested by the Gauteng police. The arrest was made through Operation Paseka on Sunday morning.

According to a statement by the Gauteng police, the 35-year-old man who was a suspect in the raping of  a 26-year-old Lion Park woman in January was among the 65 people arrested during “Operation Paseka” in Diepsloot over the weekend.

The statement threw more light on the incident which took place about three months ago before the arrest was made.

“The alleged rape incident took place after the victim had boarded a taxi driven by the 35-year-old suspect on the Old Pretoria Road in the month of January‚” it said.

“It is reported that after a passenger had alighted from the taxi‚ only the victim remained at the mercy of the taxi driver.

“He drove to a spot near Lion Park Informal Settlement (Thabo Mbeki) where the victim was allegedly raped. After the incident‚ the woman escaped by jumping out of the taxi while it was in motion,” police statement elaborated

Then months after her traumatic encounter with the taxi driver, she was able to spot the man on Saturday night in a tavern at Muldersdrift and immediately drew the attention of the police which reportedly led to his arrest early on Sunday morning.

Operation Paseka is an anti-crime drive for this year’s Easter celebrations, targeting criminals through the use of roadblocks around the province. Police have been searching for stolen cars, firearms without license and stipulated illegal substances.

Police’s Kay Makhubele says so far, a lot of people have been arrested for drunk driving, drug possession etc. The arrests made are as follows: 281 were arrested for drunk driving, 184 were arrested for drug related cases, 85 were arrested for selling liquor without licences.

There were also other suspects arrested for different reasons like robbery, possession of stolen motor vehicles, as well as possession of unlicensed firearms. This drive helped the city to fight crime to a great extent during this Easter fiesta.
