The actress’ mom had her at the age of 17 in Shepstone, although her family is originally from Bizana, Eastern Cape. According to the actress, it was her grandmother who left their ancestral home in Bizana to Shepstone alongside her mother, who was a lastborn to look for greener pasture.
Upon getting to Shepstone, her mother had to change her surname from ‘Ntshangase’ to ‘Ncayiyane’ to appear Zulu. Then, it was against the laws for Black South Africans during the apartheid era to migrate outside their tribal homelands.
After they settled in KZN, south coast, her granny was able to find a home in a place called Emagogogweni, Gamalake. Nozuko has a younger sister who is known to the public. Her other gave birth to her when she was 24 as a single mother.
Her mother later got a job at a clothing factory but subsequently lost it, making life a bit tougher for them. The actress also spent part of her early life with her stepdad, who said shared abused her mother physically and emotionally for years.

Nokuzo studied in a nearby high school in her locality. She finished matric in 2010 and was admitted into the University of Kwa-Zulu Natal (UKZN) in 2014. Nokuzo left Port Sheptown for Johannesburg to start as a professional actress at the age of 23. She made the move after Skeem Saam producers contacted her 7 months after she auditioned for a role on the show, precisely in November 2013.
Before then, she had already been exposed to community theatre, which she was introduced to at 13. There, she was trained on acting, how to value acting as an art, and the importance of discipline in the field of acting.
As a member of the community theatre, she took part in various local theatrical productions and shared the stage with big shots such as Edmund Mhlongo and Jerry Pooe. She did a lot of shows after her matric for almost four years, especially around Durban.
