Somizi Mhlongo is one of the most visible celebrities in South Africa. His involvement in choreography, singing, acting and TV presenting have contributed in his popularity, however, his style is what makes him even more popular.
Because of his crazily exciting and sometimes weird style, he is called SomGaga, after the American pop star, Lady Gaga.
The South African Star who was raised in Orlando East in Soweto, got into the entertainment industry very early, and has sustained for a very long time. He was born in 1972 into an entertainment family. His mother is the veteran actress, Mary Twale, while his father was as well an actor and comedian Ndaba Mhlongo.
SomGaga as he is fondly called by fans, dropped out of school very early, having realized his passion for dance, which he wanted to develop into a career. He dropped out in grade 9 to the disappointment of his parents.
In 1995, his girlfriend, Palesa Madisekwane gave birth to a girl, Lehlohonolo Bahumi. Somizi Mhlongo’s daughter is in her 2nd year in the university. She is as well showing signs of joining the entertainment industry like her parents when she became one of the 12 semi finalists of the TLC’s Next Great Presenter search in 2015.
Following the path of his parents, Somizi got into the South African entertainment industry quite early, at the age of six.
At the age of 13, Mhlongo participated in a stage production and he later became a part of a movie that would go international when he acted in the hit, Sarafina. In fact, the versatile entertainer said his music career began even before the movie, which was released in 1992, although he didn’t make it popular as a musician.
Prior to Sarafina, he has as well acted in Scavenger in 1987. He as well acted in another big movie, Cry the Beloved Country in 1995.
It was however as a choreographer that he became very popular. Through his choreography Mhlongo has performed in the country as well as in other places including Botswana. He has shared the stage with great artists such R-Kelly and Shakira, in 2010, during the opening ceremony of the first FIFA World Cup in Africa.
His reality show Living the Dream with Somizi, went into the life of the many-hair colored star. The show which aired on Mzansi Magic (DStv 161) had a massive followership in the country. The show began on April 13th and ended on July 6th 2016.
It was his involvement as a judge in Idols South Africa that popularized him more than any other thing in the country. Serving as a judge in the 11th season of the show, Somizi, it is believed gave it a spice that shot the votes of the show in the country from 24.3 million in season 10, to 78.8 million in 2016.
The entertainer was brought to the show to identify “razzmatazz” quotient of contestants, as he is a showman himself. He has been able to give a face-lift to the show with his very entertaining ways of doing things, his physical style, witty statements and jokes.
Although he was always in the entertainment industry, there was a time that he had gone broke. The time, according to him has taught him humility as well as to appreciate what he has.
He has opened up into his private life by declaring his sexuality. According to the entertaining celebrity, although he has a daughter of 21 years old, he is gay. According to him, he has known for a very long time, even before the birth of his daughter that he was gay.
Somizi has insisted he has never hidden his sexuality, as he told his baby mama, of his sexuality when she wanted a relationship with him so many years ago, when he was only 19.
In 2014, it was reported that Somizi Mhlongo’s Boyfriend, Themba had wanted committing suicide as a result of Mhlongo dumping him. Between late 2015 and early 2016 however, more reports emerged that the couple was still together, but Themba was cheating on Somizi with a woman who was madly in love with him.
