Reeva Steenkamp was a South African model who gained posthumous international fame after her death on the 14th of February 2013.
Reeva was shot by her boyfriend at the time – Oscar Pistorius – who said he was acting in self defense, believing she was an intruder hiding in his bathroom.
As a result of Oscar Pistorius’ fame, his subsequent trial and sentencing attracted international media coverage.
Reeva Steenkamp Biography
Reeva, who was twenty nine at the time of her death, was a paralegal, model and television personality.
Reeva Steenkamp was born in Cape Town on the 19th of August, 1983.
She was the youngest of three children; she had an older brother – Adam, and an older sister – Simone.
Her father, Barry, was a horse trainer and her mother, June was a British citizen.
Reeva was also an avid horse rider, although she gave up the hobby in her 20s when she broke her back in a fall. She had to learn to walk again as a result.
Reeva attended St Dominic’s Priory School when the Steenkamp family later moved to Port Elizabeth in the Eastern Cape Province of South Africa.
The St. Dominic’s Priory School is a notable independent, catholic School in the Port Elizabeth suburb – Miramar. The school was founded in 1900.
After St Dominic’s, Reeva Steenkamp attended the University of Port Elizabeth (which later became Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University) where she studied Law. She graduated with her Bachelor’s degree in 2005.
Reeva Steenkamp worked as both a paralegal and a model.
She intended to become a legal advocate before she turned 30, which was why she applied to the bar in 2011.
Reeva Steenkamp began her modeling career at the age of 14.
She competed in multiple beauty competitions before appearing in FHM magazine as a cover girl and a model.
She later became the first South African face of Avon cosmetics.
Her modeling career continued to expand from then on. She became a regular fixture at A-list parties and red carpets events.
She later modeled for Sivana Diamonds, the South African jewelry company.
Reeva’s popularity increased and in 2011, she was listed as no. 40 on FHM’s list of 100 sexiest women in the world.
Over time she evolved to become more than just a model but a noted socialite and television personality.
As a presenter, she worked for FashionTV as a live roaming presenter.
She also appeared in a variety of advertisements for different products like the Toyota Land Cruiser, for example.
She also appeared on BBC Lifestyle’s Baking Made Easy as a celebrity contestant.
Reeva had signed on to appear on Tropika Island of Treasure at the time of her death. She had even filmed a few episodes for the reality TV show.
The first episode of that season aired two days after her death, as scheduled. The episode was dedicated to Reeva and included a video tribute to her.
Reeva Steenkamp & Oscar Pistorius
Prior to dating South African Paralympic and Olympic athlete – Oscar Pistorius, she dated famed rugby player Francois Hougaard.
Oscar Pistorius attracted international attention as an athlete with disability who competed at the 2012 Summer Olympics.
His relationship with Reeva Steenkamp began in November 2012.
On the morning of 2013’s Valentine’s Day, Oscar shot and killed Reeva at his home in Pretoria.
Pistorius willfully admitted that he shot Reeva but alleging that it was because he believed she was an intruder.
He was formally charged with murder on the 15th of February, 2013.
Oscar Pistorius was tried for the Murder of Reeva Steenkamp as well as several other associated charges.
In September 2014, Pistorius was found not guilty on the charge of murder. He was, however, found guilty of reckless endangerment and culpable homicide.
He was sentenced to five years in prison on the 21st of October, 2014.
However, in December 2015, his verdict was overturned by the Supreme Court of Appeals.
During the second trial, Reeva Steenkmap’s parents allowed the graphic photos of their daughter’s dead body to be shown in court, so the world would know how she died and how she was found.
He was found guilty of murder and sentenced to six years in prison on the 6th of July, 2016.
Oscar Pistorius attempted suicide in August 2016. His Prison cell was searched later the same day and the blade he used was found.
