Whenever the list of the most admired celebrity marriages in South Africa was made in the last few years, that of Enhle Mbali Mlotshwa and DJ Black Coffee always appeared at the top. The once-envied couple attracted attention everywhere they went because of the successes they have registered in their careers and also the successful marriage the country believed they were having.
Unfortunately, it later turned out the marriage was not perfect after all when it was reported that it had all followed the same path as other failed marriages, ending in divorce. Since the announcement that things had called apart for them, there has continued to be a rollercoaster of accusations and counteraccusations and a legal battle that had lingered for a longer time than many might have expected.
Looking back at the marriage between the two, how they met, started dating, and all that came along the way, hardly can one tell what went wrong.
Enhle Mbali Mlotshwa Was Already A Star Before She Married Her Estranged Husband
Contrary to the belief by some that Enhle Mbali Mlotshwa was made thanks to her marriage to the famous South African DJ, it is a fact that she came a long way on her own. She is a famous actress, entrepreneur, and fashion designer who started her career in the early 2000s.
She got her debut in the 2005 South African television drama series, Mtunzini.com, in 2005. In 2006, she got what became her first lead role in the TV show, Tshisa. This became the start of what would be an eventful and rewarding career for her.
After her career had started, she had made some achievements before reportedly meeting and marrying DJ Black Coffee. She is reported to have an individual net worth of R15 million.
DJ Coffee and Enhle Mbali Mlotshwa Met On The Set Of Chesa
With both of them having their individual careers still on the right paths, the couple first met in the late 2000s. At the time, the beauty revealed that she was dating someone else. Their first meeting was when she was on the set of Chesa. It was all innocent for her when their paths crossed, but she was forced to give him attention when they had a conversation during which she admitted to herself that he was indeed smart.
Her first notion was that he was an actor, but her colleagues told her that he was a DJ instead. She did not like the idea of dating a DJ at first, and so she did not consider dating him. All efforts he made at getting her to date him failed. However, the We Dance Again hitmaker did not back down. He continued to push for a date with her until she agreed to give it a try.
He took her to one of his gigs, and after that, because all the restaurants were closed, they went and had dinner at his place. It was after this that she started considering dating him. One thing led to the other, and the rest became history.
They Were Engaged in 2010 and Got Married in 2011
As soon as they started dating, Black Coffee showed all the commitment in the world to see her every day, even though their jobs meant their schedules were always tight. She loved that so much about him. He surprised her when he got down on a knee only three months into their relationship and proposed to her.
By this time, she was already very much in love with him, and so she accepted him. Everything about the engagement was fascinating to her; how he acted, bizarre moments leading to it, and how he asked her to marry him in Greece. They officially became man and wife in 2011 when they were joined in a traditional event in Soweto in 2011.
The small ceremony that only had close friends and family members in attendance took place at Mbali’s house. Even though they both revealed that they were enjoying their marriage and deeply in love, they did not see any reason to have a white wedding until 2017, 6 years after their traditional marriage.
They delayed the white wedding because they both agreed to wait until they built their house first. They built, bought, and sold houses but still didn’t go ahead with the wedding until the DJ pushed for it, and it finally took place at Sun City.
The Marriage Was Blessed With Four Children
In the close to a decade that they spent together as man and wife, Mbali and the DJ, whose real name is Nkosinathi Innocent Maphumulo, were blessed with four children. The couple’s first child, Esona, was birthed to the DJ from a previous relationship he had when he was 23 years. According to him, when he had his first son, he had nothing; his son became his motivation to work harder.
Mbali revealed that it wasn’t easy being married to a man who had a teenage son because she was still trying to be a mother to a toddler at the time. This made her always wonder if she was doing things the right way or not. Esona also shares in the musical interest of his father.
The other children of the couple are Lilitha Maphumulo and Anesu Maphumulo. Asante is the youngest member of the family. She was born in New York in 2015. Anesu is the couple’s first son, and he was born in 2010. He has a strong passion for car racing, and he indicated an interest in having a career as an F1 driver, something that his parents have always supported. While some reports claim Lilitha Maphumulo was birthed to him by his current wife, others claimed he was also from a previous relationship.

Enhle Mbali Mlotshwa Alleged That She Was Abused By Black Coffee
In a released statement, Enhle revealed that her marriage was not as perfect as she once claimed it to be as different forms of abuse bedeviled it. She said for a very long time; she tried to see that the challenges she was suffering in her marriage were amicably settled in the family. Still, it went on for so long, and she felt the environment was becoming toxic for their children.
The actress claimed that the world-famous DJ had abused her both physically and verbally as well as financially. After holding it for a while, she realized that the abuses were not going to end, and it was feeding off of her fears, and that was why she decided to end things. According to her, her estranged husband made her feel unworthy, and he berated her.
According to the fashion designer, the unfortunate part of it all was that her children witnessed all the abuses she suffered. She gave a few instances of the alleged abuses to include once when they were in their previous residence. The DJ allegedly struck her in their bedroom in 2014. In 2019, they argued after his Music is King festival, and in the ensuing events, he threw a bag to her face.
The next time that he would attack her, according to the actress, was during her 33rd birthday celebration. This time around, she claimed that guests at the event got to witness it happen. According to reports, a family member gave credence to the actress’s claims, stating that she had been through a lot in the marriage, but she dealt with it silently.

Apart from the litany of abuses, Enhle Mbali Mlotshwa also claimed that her husband at the time cheated on her on numerous occasions. She stated that she suffered several extramarital affairs that, at a point, she was admitted into a facility because she suffered depression.
Much earlier in his marriage, he was once accused of cheating on his wife with a woman described as his mistress in 2014. It was reported at the time that a woman was requested for R100,000 from the DJ as she came across his sex tape with another woman. He would later attribute the episode to being young and overwhelmed by success.
She said she was advised to leave her husband as a result of the cheating, but her spirit told her to sit and do what was best for her family since she loved her man.
DJ Black Coffee Denied All Allegations Levelled Against Him
The South African DJ denied the reports that he was abusing his wife. He tweeted that he was raised in an environment where he witnessed domestic abuse, and so it was not something he would do to anyone. He said he did not abuse the mother of his children, and he was never going to do that.
Black Coffee also took a bashing from South Africans on social media who accused him of having an affair with the former wife of David Guetta, Cathy Guetta, after the latter shared a video of the pair giving each other hugs. She wrote in the post that they had not seen each other in a while. This was when rumors were going around about problems in his marriage and a possible split.
He set the records straight by pointing out that there was nothing between him and Cathy Guetta, except that she was his business partner, and he didn’t see them having anything in the seeable future.
Enhle Mbali Mlotshwa Obtained A Restraining Order Against DJ Black Coffee
DJ Black Coffee continues to hold his grounds that amidst all the claims by his former wife that he abused her, he had never done such a thing. Nonetheless, she still went ahead to obtain a restraining order against him.
With the support of anti-gender-based-violence groups, she stated that no matter how little the abuse was, it was going to escalate, liking it to the situation of Reeva Steenkamp and Karabo. She added that the struggle was not just for herself but also every woman going through gender-based violence.
The actress and TV personality also indicated that even while the divorce was still lingering, Maphumulo was still trying to muscle her to silence by using his financial might and intimidation. Regarding restraining orders, the DJ will follow them to the latter and obey what is stated. But he would ensure it was not something permanent since the case is still in court.
The Couple’s Court Case Are Far From Being Over
The terms of divorce between the two estranged lovers seem to be a very long way from being over. In November 2020, it was reported that Mbali had lost her case against her former husband where she was demanding that he be made to pay her over R130,000 each month in spousal support and for their two kids.
She argued that as a DJ, he was making more than R100 million each year and so he could afford to take care of the expensive life she was accustomed to when she was with him. The actress asked the court to mandate the DJ to pay her R80,000 as child support for their kids and R30,000 for staple goods. She also needed R17,800 for her costly beautifying agents. She also asked for him to cover her clinical costs. Another thing that the actress wanted was for the Johannesburg High Court to make her husband pay for her legal fee amounting to R4 million.
In the argument of the actress, her husband made her become a housewife because he didn’t want her to be doing scenes considered to be sentimental. In its decision, the court ruled that she was qualified for R15,000 for her upkeep and R50,000 in kid uphold.
For now, they still have pending court cases regarding the divorce.
