Legends they say live forever and SA’s jazz legend Thandi Klaasen will not be an exception.

Legendary singer Thandi Klaasen died on Sunday 15 January. Shortly after, Minister of Arts and Culture Nathi Mthethwa confirmed the news that Nelson Mandela’s favourite singer Thandi Klaasen has died at the age of 86.

“We are saddened to learn that Jazz Legend Thandi Klaasen has passed on. Our thoughts are with her daughter Lorraine, her loved ones, & fans,” Mthethwa wrote on Twitter.

Since then, it’s been raining tributes for the renowned South African musician and political stalwart who had a long and illustrious career. Klaasen died at the age of 86 after a long battle with pancreatic cancer.

Thus, today, hundreds of people – friends, family, fans and high-profile personalities including former president Thabo Mbeki, Dorothy Masuku, Caiphus Semenya and Abigail Kubheka have gathered at the DJ Thomas Hall in Alberton to bid the final farewell to jazz legend Thandi Klaasen.

So far, it has been a flood of emotions at the service with those close to Klaasen fondly remembering the contribution she made to the country. She made a lot of positive impact through her music which she will forever be remembered for.

During her memorial service at the Germiston City Hall in Ekurhuleni yesterday, Thandi Klaasen was hailed as a heroine and an idol.

Klaasen will be laid to rest at the Thomas Nkosi Memorial Park, Heroes Acre in Boksburg later today.

Earlier this month, Klaasen’s daughter, Lorraine, revealed on her personal Facebook page that her mother was battling with pancreatic cancer. In addition, she thanked friends and fans for all the support that she and the family have received during this hard time.
