It’s Official! Trevor Noah Will Host MTV African Music Awards 2016


It’s official! Comedy icon Trevor Noah will be the main host at the MTV African Music Awards 2016 (MAMAs) in Johannesburg.

There were initial speculations that either Idris Elba or Trevor Noah will be hosting the show. However, Idris hinted that he’s already booked for that weekend, but wished he could come.

Thus, the lot fell on Noah. The organizers of the show made the announcement on Wednesday morning to the excitement of fans.

Confirming his gig at the event‚ Noah said;

“I’m a huge fan of African music and achievement‚ and it’s going to be a massive pleasure celebrating them both at the MTV African Music Awards 2016 in my own home town of Johannesburg.”

Explaining why they chose Noah‚ Senior Vice President & Managing Director of Viacom International Media Networks (VIMN Africa) Alex Okosi said;

“Trevor Noah is an outstanding entertainer‚ and testament to the amazing talent that Africa has to offer the world. To have him host the MAMA‚ our annual celebration of Africa music‚ creativity and achievement‚ is a powerful and inspiring message. We are delighted that our first ever show in Johannesburg will be presented by one of the city’s most loved and admired personalities.”

Guests at the glamorous ceremony will be entertained by African artists. Some include – Nasty C, Babes Wodumo, Nigerian female Singer Yemi Alade, Cassper Nyovest; Alikiba; Ycee. Others will be announced later.

Meanwhile, some nominees for the awards will be announced later today In Johannesburg while on October 2, the rest will be announced in Lagos.

The event will be broadcast live across the world on MTV Base (DStv Channel) and MTV Base (DStv Channel 322) at 21:00 CAT. The show will also be transmitted worldwide on partner stations and content platforms from October.

Also, as the official host of the classy show, Trevor Noah will have to take a brief break from his job as the host of the much-loved US late night talk show – The Daily Show.

The event is set to take place at the Ticketpro Dome in Northgate on October 22. Tickets are available for sale from R250.
