Most Wanted Suspect Of ATM Bombing And Hijacking Nabbed

BuzzSouthAfrica has been informed about the arrest of a gun-wielding ATM bomber by members of the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (Hawks) in North West at Witbank.

As learnt, the criminal is one of the most wanted suspects linked to cases of ATM bombing, cash-in-transit heist and hijacking.

He was arrested at the Witbank Magistrate Court while making an appearance for a case of cash-in-transit that happened in Witbank on January last year.

SAPS related that the arrest emanated from intensive investigations by the Hawks following two incidents of ATM bombings that took place on 03 June 2016 at different Standard Bank ATMs in Christiana.

“In one incident the suspect was caught in the act at one of the ATMs but the ruthless criminal allegedly opened fire at the police before driving off in a white VW Golf 7 GTI with an estimated amount of over R600 000.

“The vehicle was later found abandoned in Orkney.

“Through investigations, the vehicle was linked to a case of hijacking and attempted murder that took place in Mpumalanga late in 2015,” narrated the police.

While investigations are still on-going, it is believed that the suspect could be linked to more cases of ATM bombing around the country.

Come 16 January 2017, the suspect will appear before the Christiana Magistrate Court where he will be facing charges of ATM Bombing.

Meanwhile, a multi-disciplinary operation by members of the Hawks’ Organised Crime Investigation in Secunda, SANEB, CIG Secunda, Emzinoni detectives and Firearm Unit has led to the arrest of five suspects for conspiracy to commit murder.

“The suspects aged between 33 and 48, were allegedly residing at a farm and the owner requested them to vacate the farm.

“The suspects allegedly refused to leave and a court order was subsequently issued against them. (Afterwards), the men allegedly planned to murder the farm owner but their execution collapsed when the victim managed to run for his life and opened a case against them.

“One of the suspects, a 33-year-old, was found in possession of an unlicensed firearm with serial numbers filed off,” SAPS narrated.

The suspects appeared before the Bethal Magistrate’s Court today for conspiracy to commit murder.
