Molefe’s R30 Million Golden Handshake, DA Demands A Grilling For Payback

While we were all busy marking the death of Jesus Christ and celebrating the resurrection of the Son of God, it emerged that former Eskom CEO, Brian Molefe pocketed R30 million as a golden handshake.

Documents from Eskom which revealed the details of Molefe’s R30 million golden handshake indicated that the payment was made on 23rd March. Precisely, it was exposed that the former Eskom CEO received R30.1 million as severance and Eskom pension fund pay.

Reacting to this development, the Democratic Alliance (DA) party specified that there are vital projects which would benefit all South Africans; that need the money  Molefe received. Thus, DA vowed that it wouldn’t ignore the irregular use of taxpayer money.

To the party, “it is outrageous that after only 18 months as CEO at the power utility, Molefe would be awarded such an exuberant bonus.” DA pointed out that Mr Molefe resigned out of his own accord, following his naming in the State of Capture Report by former Public Protector, Adv Thuli Madonsela.

As such, DA disclosed that it will be writing to Adv Busisiwe Mkhwebane, the Public Protector to request a probing of Molefe’s R30 million golden handshake.

The party stressed that the R30 million pension payout Brian Molefe received from Eskom is another case of gross abuse of public funds.

“This is clearly not just a pension pay-out as Molefe claims. It is a golden handshake and the DA strongly urges Molefe to immediately pay back the R30 million bonus.

“It is unacceptable that taxpayer money is repeatedly used to benefit underperforming executives who do not deserve it, while vital infrastructure projects are left to gather dust.

“The Public Protector must, therefore, investigate this highly irregular payout, in order to establish on what basis Molefe deserves to receive this amount of money,” DA agitated.

Meanwhile, the party will also ask the Public Protector to urgently investigate the use of state resources to provide VIP protection to Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma

DA contended that Zuma’s ex-wife doesn’t deserve the protection as she is not holding any position that would justify such protection.

Acknowledging that Minister of Police, Fikile Mbalula justified Dlamini-Zuma’s VIP protection with claims of security threats against her life, DA pointed out that she’s been receiving VIP protection prior to her arrival at the hotel where the supposed threat happened.

Based on the above, DA expressed thus: “the fact that he will not come out and make clear the true basis of these supposed threats make us increasingly concerned that there is an abuse of state resources at play.

“Ms Dlamini-Zuma is a firm contender in the succession race for ANC presidency. It cannot be that between now and December she will be provided VIP protection at taxpayer expense, essentially as preferential treatment in an internal party race.”

Afterwards, the party wailed that there are important policing resource issues which need attention in the country.

“South African citizens face threats from criminals in their homes and on our streets on a daily basis and yet a Zuma favourite is provided protection for unsubstantiated threats instead of our people.

“The Public Protector needs to investigate this as a matter of urgency to ensure that any abuse of state resources is stopped,” DA charged.
