Cabinet Reshuffle: Molefe Brian To Replace Pravin Gordhan? Mantashe Reacts

On Sunday, South Africans woke up to the news of Molefe Brian being tipped for a top cabinet post – which will subsequently lead to him taking over from Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan.

As gathered, the proposed move was scheduled to hold immediately after the State of the Nation Address (SONA) – when President Jacob Zuma is expected to reshuffle his cabinet.

Molefe’s appointment is being handled by ANC top officials at the Luthuli House, as confirmed by the North West provincial secretary Dakota Legoete.

“From time to time we review lists and assess our strengths and weaknesses. Brian is a citizen of this country and a resident of our province.

Him having announced his exit from Eskom and so excellently executed his mandate, we are of the view that he, and other cadres we are engaging, can contribute immensely to the strengthening and deepening of democracy in our province,” Legoete said.

While vexation about the development continues to grow each day, ANC secretary-general Gwede Mantashe has addressed the issue, insisting that Molefe’s name is not on ANC’s list.

Mantashe refutes claims Molefe is on ANC list

He maintained that there is already a list of Parliamentarians registered with the IEC which cannot be amended until the Parliamentarians finish 12 months in the National Assembly.

The spin doctor insisted that processes must be followed if the North West wants to field Brian.

He explained: “We don’t wake up one day, put Brian Molefe on the list to Parliament and he goes to Parliament. It doesn’t happen that way.

There should be two things that happen; they should wait for the anniversary of the amendment and at that point, it can reprioritise its list. If it prioritises Brian, then he will be the first to replace whoever is out of Parliament when there’s a vacancy.

Or they could wait for the list of Parliamentarians to be depleted and then include Molefe’s name when the list is replenished.”

The Tragic Fall Of Molefe Brian

Perhaps, many people didn’t know that Molefe Brian was once a noble public servant who South Africa had grown to admire.

He was part of that golden generation – the founders of Treasury – who reshaped an archaic finance department into a world-class institution that would sit at the centre of South Africa’s economic policymaking and financial management.

Molefe gradually turned to a powerful man in his post-Treasury life, like many of his equals in the private and public sector.

Truth be told, those who came across him had only high praise. Even those who were pissed off by his arrogance and admiration for shiny things could not fault him on his abilities and integrity.

But just last year, a twist in personality brought him low before his admirers and the country at large. The story of his capture and eventual fall from the standard will forever be tragic in South Africa’s history.

Worst of all, the spectacle of Molefe breaking down and crying before a national audience will always be a haunting image from this tragedy.

He got implicated in Thuli’s explosive State of Capture report, released on November 2, prompting his public breakdown and confession about a non-existent Saxonwold shebeen.

Molefe later stepped down, claiming it was “not an admission of wrongdoing” but the right thing to do in the interests of good corporate governance and “in the interests of Eskom and the public it serves.”

Now, the ANC wants to push him to a higher position amidst controversies.
