What Is The Duration Of The Courses Mentioned Above?

At Stellenbosch University, most undergraduate degree programmes are three years. However, the application level is compared to the applicant’s academic background.

The academic year at the institution consists of two semesters. The first semester runs from February to June, and the second from July to November.

Stellenbosch University Requirements

Requirements for admission into the Stellenbosch differ depending on the degree that the applicant is applying for. The school’s requirements for the first degree vary from that of the second degree.

Here are the Stellenbosch University Requirements:

For applicants from the South African school system:

You must have obtained a National Senior Certificate (NSC) as certified by Umalusi with admission to Bachelor’s degree studies. This means that you must obtain a mark of at least 50% in each of four school subjects from the list of university admission subjects:

For applicants from the International school system: The following are required.

  • Final school results from International Curriculum (Cambridge International, International Baccalaureate, etc.), including School of Tomorrow. ​
  • A minimum TOEFL score of 550 for the paper-based assessment, or 213 for the computer-based assessment, or an IELTS score of 6.5.
  • Letters of recommendation (Though not compulsory). However, Doctoral candidates must submit a draft research proposal (or an extensive statement of intent).
  • There are no special requirements for international students that are home-schooled, as admission is based on academic performance, irrespective of whether you are home-schooled or not.

Note:

  • Applications for undergraduate MBChB and Physiotherapy programmes are open to international students with permanent residency only.
  • Admission is not automatically deferred to the next intake.
  • International students without residency are unfortunately not eligible to apply to the university.

  • Undergraduate applications for international students open on 1 March and close on 30 June each year

2. The second requirement is the National Benchmark Tests (NBTs). Both South African and international prospective undergraduates must write their NBTs. It is a basic requirement.

Note:

  • International applicants who do not have NBT centres in their countries may complete the NBTs at SU before registering. Such persons can e-mail the Centre for Prospective Students at [email protected] for bookings and more information.

Stellenbosch University Postgraduate Diploma Requirements

Postgraduate courses at Stellenbosch university are either master’s or honors. Master’s degrees at the institution are mostly thesis/research-based, while an honors programme at the prestigious institutions allows students to spend one year furthering their studies in their major course.

  • Some Schools/Colleges may accept an Advanced Diploma for entry into a Postgraduate Diploma if HEQF (Higher Education Qualification Framework) requirements are met.

The duration of the postgraduate Diploma at Stellenbosch University is a minimum of at least two consecutive semesters. Note, however, that all modules shall be completed at the University except with the permission of the Senate.

Stellenbosch University Masters by Coursework and Masters by Research Requirements

  • A relevant prerequisite degree OR
  • Admission to the status of that degree OR
  • Attained a level of competence

The duration of Masters by course work at Stellenbosch University is a minimum of two consecutive semesters (full-time) or four consecutive semesters (part-time), after which the degree is conferred.

Note: Periods of attendance at the graduate level at another institution or in another College may be accepted with permission and in terms of College regulations.

The duration of a Master’s by Research at Stellenbosch University is a minimum of two consecutive semesters (full-time) or four consecutive semesters (part-time), after which the degree may be conferred.

Stellenbosch University Bachelor of Honours Degrees Requirements

  • 30% for a South African Language of Learning and Teaching (English or Afrikaans)
  • An achievement rating of 4 (50% – 59%) in four 20-credit subjects.
  • An appropriate Bachelor’s degree OR
  • Admission to the status of that degree OR
  • Attained a level of competence

The duration of this programme at Stellenbosch University is a minimum of at least two consecutive semesters. All modules shall be completed at the University except with the permission of the Senate.

Stellenbosch University Doctor of philosophy or supervised Doctor degrees by research Requirements

  • A relevant prerequisite degree OR
  • Admission to the status of that degree

The duration of a Doctor of Philosophy is a minimum of four consecutive semesters (full-time) or eight consecutive semesters (part-time), after which the degree is conferred.
