Leader of the Congress of the People (Cope) Mosiuoa Lekota has reacted to the revelation made by SABC’s CEO Jimi Matthews that he was part of the body who decided not to give the EFF full coverage on its TV shows.
Matthews resigned as acting SABC CEO a few weeks back and in a letter, he wrote to the public broadcaster’s board chair Professor Mbulayeni Maghuve, he admitted:
“I have compromised the values I hold dear under the mistaken belief that I could be more effective inside the SABC than the outside‚ passing comment from the sidelines.
Matthews also said that the SABC’s circle of influence, including “certain individuals” outside the SABC, led to the public broadcaster limiting coverage of the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) and its “loudmouth” leader, Julius Malema, during the 2014 elections.
In reaction to this, Cope’s leader Mosiuoa Lekota said Matthews partly revealed what has been happening in the SABC’s editorial room where the corporation’s COO, Hlaudi Motsoeneng, and some senior members of the ruling African National Congress (ANC) decided in 2013/14 not to give EFF party coverage on SABC TV.
Letoka said his party is neither shocked by such revelation nor is it surprised by the possible outcome it would have in the nearest future.
According to Letoka, the similar plot made against (Cope) in both the 2009 and 2014 elections where the ruling party plotted to destroy his party and that of Malema’s.
“There has always been a plot to weaken and destroy Cope and Julius Malema admitted in 2014 that‚ when he was still a senior member of the African National Congress National Working Committee‚ he was part of a clandestine committee whose sole plan was to execute the demise of Cope”
“Cope strongly believes that with these latest revelations and the current deliberately engineered political chaos at the SABC‚ free and fair elections won’t be possible on 3 August 2016‚” said Lekota.
“This is already evident with the one-sided reporting by the SABC on the election campaigns of political parties,” Letoka said.
SABC has been ‘Satanic’ against the EFF
Similarly, the Deputy president of the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) Floyd Shivamb slammed the SABC for its alleged bias against the EFF.
Shivambu hinted that “someone must fall”, as he labeled the public broadcaster’s alleged decision to ban the EFF “satanic”.
“I hear that #JimiMatthews is revealing the satanic decisions of SABC against the EFF, & how they are fearful of the EFF. Someone must fall,” he said
SABC has despite all antagonisms by opposition parties and journalist, remained adamant at its decision not to air any event that would speak give a negative impression of the government.
