New KZN Premier Willies Mchunu Loses Mom


Condolences have continued to pour in since Tuesday afternoon following the death of new KZN Premier, Willies Mchunu’s mother.

Mchunu’s mother, Ntombi Mchunu died at the age of 85 at an Umtshezi (Estcourt) hospital after a short illness. Sadly, the premier is mourning the death of a second family member, having buried his wife, Dudu last April.

Reactions Following KZN Premier, Willies Mchunu Mother’s Death

Reacting to the shocking news, ANC’s provincial secretary Super Zuma expressed sadness about Mchunu’s mother’s death, stating that the ANC was deeply saddened to hear about her painful demise.

“We can imagine the pain the Mchunu family is going through after losing yet another family member in a short period of time…

“She will be sorely missed by many of the ANC volunteers and the community of Umtshezi where she lived. She opened her home to many members of the community who wanted to engage with comrade Willies Mchunu while discharging his responsibility as the servant,” Zuma said.

Also, National Freedom Party’ (NFP) member, Vikizitha Mlotshwa said: “We pray to God that he gives them [the family] the strength to overcome death & sickness.”

The Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) was not left out. The opposition party’s MPL and leader in the KZN Legislature, Mr Blessed Gwala, who spoke in a statement, said:

“We are saddened to hear of the sad passing away of the mother of Premier Willies Mchunu. It is indeed a very trying and emotionally difficult time for the Mchunu Family.

We are mindful that KZN Premier Mchunu had recently lost his beloved wife and that his elderly father is extremely ill in the ICU. While death is beyond our control and illness can take its toll on anyone, we pray that the Premier and his family will be comforted through prayer.

Meanwhile, the African National Congress (ANC) has implored South Africans to pray for Mchunu’s father, who is currently hospitalized in the ICU.
