Appalled by the accused disreputable record, the fighters vowed to disrupt the meeting should Bovu be sworn in as councilor. They also told Johannesburg manager, Trevor Fowler (who was present to oversee the proceedings up to the election of the city’s new speaker) to peacefully delist Bovu as Member of the Mayoral Committee (MMC) and also have him arrested.
Bewildered by Bovu’s unfitness, the fighters wondered why the sitting should swear in a well-known criminal like Bovu, who is currently facing criminal charges.
Johannesburg Council Meeting Goes Haywire
In the heat of the moment, an aggrieved EFF councillor queried:
“I want to ask how this council feel right now going ahead in the presence of a criminal. Dan Bovu is facing criminal charges at Eldorado Park SAPS and Brixton. The police are here… this will not take more than five minutes. He is a criminal.”
Another EFF councillor vehemently accused Fowler of “protecting corruption” by not acceding to the EFF’s demands since he bluntly refused to hand Bovu over to the police.
However, it was argued that the accused has been cleared by the IEC- therefore, he is fit to be sworn in despite criminal records. Secondly, the city manager called on the fighters to calm down as appropriate steps will be taken at a later stage if their allegations are found to be true.
BuzzSouthAfrica earlier brought you a report that the EFF’s spokesperson, Mbuyiseni Ndlozi, on Monday, confirmed that the party will open a criminal case of bribery and corruption against Bovu for trying to lure EFF members to vote for the ANC at Monday’s Johannesburg council meeting by offering them R500 000.
It is paramount to note that election results published by IEC shows that the ANC won 121 seats in Johannesburg, the DA gathered 104, the EFF managed to gather 30 seats, while small parties shared the remaining 270 council seats.
