Get Ready For Severe Thunderstorm in Gauteng, Weather Service Warns

The South African weather report has issued a warning to residents in Gauteng to gear themselves against severe thunderstorms expected to hit the area later today.

The weather service forecaster said there’s a 60 percent chance of rain every day this week, until Saturday and Gauteng will be one of the major areas expected to be hit by  heavy thunder storm  even as wet weather conditions persist.

This would be the second time the city would be hit by storm this month.

Some weeks back, the emergency services across Gauteng were put on their toes as they were alerted  of a heavy down pour and thunderstorm.  This came after six deaths were recorded in Ekurhuleni and Johannesburg

The damage caused to some of the province’s infrastructure led to road closures at major intersections, including the N3 in Links field, which was subsequently re-opened, alongside the R55 near Kyalami, the R21 leading to the OR Tambo International Airport, as well as Witkoppen Road.

Earlier this week also, the body of a toddler was found near the Jukskei River. Forensic pathologists are still trying to confirm whether or not it’s the body of three year old Everite Chauke, who was swept away in Alexandra.

Pathologists on Wednesday took DNA from Chauke’s parents, who were initially expected to identify the body but were not asked to do so.

The police’s Kay Makhubele said, “The doctor advised us that the only way to identify the body will be to do the DNA. It doesn’t take a long but sometimes it takes long. So far we believe this one will be done as quickly as possible.”

The Chauke family and many others who lost their homes in the floods are currently being housed at a relief centre set up by Gift of the Givers.

Meanwhile, forecaster Puseletso Mofokeng said it will still be generally cloudy across the province and warm during day time. He, however, noted that there’s also a 60% chance of rain with the risk of severe thunderstorms. “But we’ll give specifics once the storms are developing,” he added
