The music video for Gangnam Style which went viral and maintained the most-watched status on YouTube for five long years has been unseated by Wiz Khalifa’s video See You Again featuring singer Charlie Puth.
See You Again hit nearly 2.9 billion views on YouTube on Tuesday morning, taking the top spot for most viewed video from Psy, the South Korean pop star behind the previous record holder Gangnam Style.
The popular video became the first video to reach one billion views, thus, forcing YouTube to upgrade its storage capabilities in 2014 to cope with the high demand.
Subsequently, Gangnam Style held the most viewed video record on YouTube for five years, after surpassing Justin Bieber’s Baby in November of 2012. The views were mounting up so high that the website almost broke down.
Notwithstanding, the video has since been knocked off the top spot by artists Wiz Khalifa and Charlie Puth and the video for their song See You Again.
See You Again is the 2015 collaboration, which featured on the Furious 7 soundtrack and used to pay tribute to the late movie star Paul Walker. Two years after it’s release, the video has reached 2,902,454,646 views and counting while Gangnam Style sits at about 2,896,173,595. The new record comes just a few days before the five-year anniversary of the Korean hit.
The fast rising See You Again video averaged over three million views per day, just this year alone.
“I’m super excited and grateful to everyone who supported the song and video on YouTube, and happy to inspire and impact so many lives,” rapper Khalifa said in a statement.
For Puth, it’s quite unbelievable as he never anticipated so much love for his song on YouTube.
“I remember when I signed up for YouTube in 2007 and had hopes of uploading a video and it reaching 10,000 views,” Puth said. “Now a decade later, it feels incredible to be a part of the most-viewed video on YouTube.”
Meanwhile, in 2013, Korean pop star Psy had said that his success with Gangnam Style was an “accident”.
“‘Gangnam Style’ was not normal,” he said at the time, adding that the song was not standard either. Thus, he was surprised at how it became such a huge success on YouTube.
