CSA Anoints Farhaan Behardien To Captain Proteas In T20 Series

BuzzSouthAfrica has confirmed the appointment of Farhaan Behardien to captain the Proteas for the first two matches in the KFC T20 International Series against Sri Lanka.

That’s not the only surprise. Cricket South Africa (CSA) also named a 13-man squad with six new caps.

The new caps are: Jon Jon Smuts, Theunis de Bruyn, Mangaliso Mosehle, Andile Phehlukwayo, Dane Paterson and Lungi Ngidi.

Commenting on the selection, CSA Selection Convener, Linda Zondi said:

“We have decided to rest some of our key senior players for this series.

This is the last chance we have to do this as the Momentum ODI series that follows is an important part of our build-up to the ICC Champions Trophy Tournament in England in the middle of the year.

Those senior players who are involved in the Indian Premier League will be playing non-stop from now until the end of August with the tours coming up to New Zealand and England in addition to the ICC event.”

Zondi said Farhaan Behardien was anointed to captain the squad because he was one of the standout players in CSA franchise T20 Challenge.

He’s the second leading runs scorer behind Jon-Jon Smuts and holds the best strike rate.

Zondi further divulged that David Wiese was one of  the original selections. However, he informed CSA that he will be taking up a Kolpak contract and was thus, withdrawn from the squad.

“Both AB de Villiers and Morne Morkel are due to resume playing at domestic level later this month and could come into contention for the third T20,” added Zondi.
