It’s official, Eastern Cape Municipalities are South Africa’s hub of corrupt activities and, Hawks’ wrath has been unleashed to get the corrupt entities pay for robbing South Africans of basic services.
Information culled from the South African Police Service (SAPS) has it that corruption at Eastern Cape municipalities have worsened. And, that a task team has been formed to investigate the ugly situation.
The National Head of the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (Hawks), Lieutenant General Mthandazo Ntlemeza has appointed a high level task team to investigate the allegations of corruption in the Eastern Cape municipalities.
From our gatherings, the high level task team will be led by a highly experienced Brigadier from the Hawks who played a pivotal role in fighting crime during his tenure as part of the Joint Anti Task Team led by the NPA between 2003 and 2005.
Also, the task team will be composed of investigators from the Hawks, NPA prosecutors and the Asset Forfeiture Unit members.
Nevertheless, SAPS indicated that Lieutenant General Mthandazo Ntlemeza will at his disposal, add other members when the need arises.
Precisely, the OR Tambo District Municipality, Engcobo Municipality, Butterworth, Mnquma Local Municipality and Mthatha were identified as the hub of the alleged corrupt activities.
Commenting, Lieutenant General Ntlemeza said:
“Corrupt officials rob our people of the basic services and as the unit entrusted with rooting out corruption at all institutions we have formulated a task team that will ruffle the feathers at the affected municipalities.
We are determined to uproot corruption and should our investigations find anyone to be on the wrong side of the law, that person will feel the wrath of the Hawks and the mighty of our justice system.
We cannot sit down and fold our arms as opportunistic individuals prey on innocent citizens by denying them their Constitutional Rights through corruption.”
Thereafter, Lieutenant General Ntlemeza thanked officials at the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality, Amathole Municipality and the Buffalo City Municipality for their cooperation during a probe by the Hawks.
He added that more task teams will be formulated to tackle corruption at other municipalities at various provinces.
