Former AU board chair Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma has asked her supporters to put in more effort in lobbying people to support her presidential race.
As the tempo of the ANC Presidential race in December goes higher, aspirants have continued to step up every mechanism to ensure the number of their supporters are accelerated.
Dlamini-Zuma launched the appeal with her supporters during the Peter Mokaba memorial lecture at Polokwane’s Jack Bores municipal hall on Thursday evening.
She asked the ANC Youth League president Collen Maine and her supporters to work hard and recruit branches to endorse her.
“I have spent my life dedicated to the ANC, and there is no way I can turn down the nomination. But you have to work towards it so that the branches share that view,” said Dlamini-Zuma.
Dlamini-Zuma’s call for a massive support comes after the ANCYL officially endorsed her as Zuma’s successor, with the Mpumalanga province leaderDavid Mabuza as her deputy.
The party Presidential hopeful will be contesting for the hot seat with the Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa and the ANC veteran Mathews Phosa.
While Deputy Cyril Ramaphosa is considered Dlamini-Zuma’s main political opponent, a number of ANC led branches including Ward 24, 52, 95, 96, 98, 99 and 106 metro branches in Cape Town have declared their supports for Phosa to be the next ANC president.
The ANCYL leader had, however, told members and party supporters that the national executive committee of the ANCYL has resolved to support Dlamini-Zuma.
The leader claimed that the decision to support Dlamini-Zuma was never easy to make as the league deliberated and concluded that they would rally behind Dlamini-Zuma.
He said the league also decided that the likes of Gwede Mantashe the ANC secretary would step down for the current deputy president of the ANC and Free State chairperson, Comrade Ace Magashule.
“We don’t believe that he will kill the ANC,” said Maine.
Others the league want to see in the new ANC government include Comrade Nathi Mthethwa as the national chair of the ANC, DSG for monitoring and evaluation Comrade Jessie Duarte, DSG for organising and campaigns Comrade Fikile Mbalula and the treasurer general Comrade Maite Nkoana-Mashabane.”
The league’s endorsement of these party members is seen by political analysts and critics as a clear indication that the league is strongly behind embattled President Jacob Zuma.
