The owner of Machere Fashion House and fashion designer, Machere Pooe, has landed on the wrong side of the law for allegedly sacking an employee unlawfully.
Still at sea as to why she was fired, Pooe’s ex-employee Fredah Pheleu has taken her case to the Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration (CCMA) in Benoni, Ekurhuleni.
Meanwhile, after Pooe failed to appear before the CCMA office on Thursday, where the matter was to be heard, it was postponed to next month for a ruling.
For the most part, we are not sure of what actually transpired between Pooe and the disgruntled former employee. Moreover, Pooe and her husband are currently overseas and could not be reached for comments.
Nevertheless, CCMA spokeswoman Lusanda Myoli confirmed the case, adding that the hearing will proceed.
“The CCMA confirms that the matter was received and scheduled for a hearing.
“In the event that the respondent does not attend the con-arb [conciliation and arbitration] hearing the process continues in default,” Myoli added.
Con-arb hearing normally passes through a rather quick process. After hearing both parties’ evidence, the arbitrator issues a binding arbitration award 14 days after the hearing.
The dissatisfied employee who is a single mother worked at Pooe’s Zulu African Design Emporium store at OR Tambo International Airport as a sales person. Following her alleged unlawful dismissal last month, the woman accused Pooe of flouting labour laws. Upon dismissal, R3000 was docked from her salary.

“I still don’t know why she fired me. There was no verbal warning or even a letter of dismissal. I was told to pack and go,” Pheleu said.
Fashion designer Machere Pooe is married to actor, director and businessman Pepsi Pokane.
