Reports have it that a DA Councillor in the George Municipality of Western Cape Province is facing 12 counts for fraud following the illegal sale of subsidised plots and RDP houses.
The Councillor, a mayoral committee member for housing identified as Henry Jones reprtedly swindled several South Africans out of their cash.
BuzzSouthAfrica learnt that Jones was arrested at his home by George police at his home in Pacaltsdorp thesame day his party informed him that a disciplinary hearing found him guilty of the RDP housing scam.
As gathered, his party membership with the DA is threatened and may be butted off the municipality’s mayoral committee.
Captain Malcolm Pojie confirmed this and related that Jones and his alleged accomplice, Eglo Johnson appeared in the George Magistrate’s Court on Thursday after they were charged with fraud and theft.
They “face 12 counts for fraud and one for theft, each, with regard to the alleged selling of RDP houses,” Pojie divulged.
Reporting this, IOL narrated that Virgill Gericke, a Councillor and leader of the Plaaslike Besorgde Inwoners (PBI), who led the charge to get Jones removed from office over the housing scam stated:
“The PBI was approached by many of these victims and in my capacity as Councillor, I raised this issue many times in council. I was not taken seriously by the DA who mocked and laughed at me when I submitted this matter to council. I even took one of the victims to the DA mayor in order to seek a solution, but nothing came of it.”
Meanwhile, DA’s East Region chairman Jaco Londt said Jones has 10 working days to appeal the party’s decision.
“He needs to come up with compelling arguments why his membership should not be terminated,” Londt stated.
Londt added that Jones isn’t listed on any of DA’s candidate nomination lists for the upcoming elections.
“He did apply to be a councillor again and went through the party’s selection processes and interviews, but he did not make it back on the lists this time around,” stated Londt.
The DA Councillor and his accomplice were released on R5 000 bail, and the case will be coming up on 23rd June.
