A DA councilor for Northern Cape has been gunned down.
The newly elected councilor Johannes Baaitjies was shot dead just as the Democratic Alliance (DA) prepares to take hold of a once ANC controlled municipality.
Baaitjies was found lying face-down on the main road between Danielskuil and Postmasburg on Thursday while his companion was found in a critical state.
Baaitjies, alongside his fellow councilors, was meant to be officially sworn in to council at the Kgatelopele municipality as the party intends to make the councilor form coalition with the two councilors from the Kgatelopele Community Forum (KFC) in order to take control of the municipality from the ruling ANC.
Report however has it that the councilor was shot twice in the head and once in the upper body, and dragged a distance away from his car before he was dumped.
Upon receiving this tragic report, DA said they suspected that the murder was politically motivated. the party also revealed that their murdered councilor received death threats shortly after winning Ward 2 which was controlled by the ANC.
“It is suspected that his‚ as Baaitjies received death threats shortly after winning Ward 2‚ successfully wrestling it away from the ANC (African National Congress)…Baaitjies‚ along with his fellow councilor’s was meant to be officially sworn into council at the Kgatelopele municipality on Thursday‚” the party said.
“He‚ another DA councilor and two Kgatelopele Community Forum were to form a coalition government and take control of the municipality from the ANC‚” the party added
The party went on to state that they would remain strong and steadfast not minding the cowardly acts committed by faceless thugs to derail them from achieving their aim of ” stamping out corruption‚ create jobs and deliver services to bring the change that moves South Africa forward again.”
“The DA vehemently denounces any kind of prejudice and criminal activity based on political affiliation, we call on the police to ensure that those responsible for the murder of Baaitjies are speedily brought to book”.
The council is now officially a hung council, said the party, as they prepares to contest the upcoming by-election for Ward 2. The DA also said that Baaitjies’ death will gear them to work harder to increase their majority for the benefit of the people of Danielskuil who they say deserve better
The DA extends their heartfelt condolences to Baaitjies’ wife and three sons, as well as his extended family. “He will be sorely missed and it will not be easy finding someone of his capabilities to fill the gap that he has left,” the party added.
