It was first insinuated that the Department of Correctional Services (DCS) was wasting taxpayers’ money on hiring strippers for inmates after a Facebook page – Durban Crime N All – shared pictures of strippers dancing with prisoners at Johannesburg Medium B Prison – Sun City.
Excerpts from the message that came with the pictures read:
“…The department of correctional services is really playful when it comes to punishing these so-called criminals. Clearly, they get comfortable inside with 5-star treatment.
…They get strippers to come and dance to the point of even undressing them (prisoners) What message does it send to the criminals outside?
This is a clear indication that there’s no justice…some are in there for rape yet they get (entertained by strippers) The South African Justice System is a joke… We cannot tolerate this happening. They are fed with our tax money yet have terrorised so many innocent people…”
In response to the outrage that followed the pictures, the government promised that the Department of Correctional Services will hold an urgent media briefing.
Already, the department had confirmed the authenticity of pictures. According to its spokesperson, Singabakho Nxumalo the department is aware of the pictures. They were generated from one of the prison’s events.
At the media briefing, Correctional Services condemned the incident which brought about the pictures and promised to leave no stone unturned in dealing with the matter.
“According to the report we recieved on the preliminary investigations, the pictures taken were of event hosted in line with June Youth Month celebrations on the 21st of June at Johannesburg Medium B correctional center.
“…It transpires that the form of entertainment as depicted in the social media was not approved and not in line with correctional services policies and procedures which are clear in terms of appropriate clothing and behaviour when inside the correctional environment,” stated the department.
