Opposition party, the Democratic Alliance has blasted the ruling African National Congress (ANC) for acting in a most disgraceful and undemocratic manner at the Nelson Mandela Bay metro council meeting in Johannesburg.
According to reports gathered by BuzzSouthAfrica, ANCcouncilors attacked DA council leaders in the Nelson Mandela Bay metro council meeting, leading to an increased temper during a council sitting.
Though no profound reason was given for the rise of the rift between the two key parties, report from members of various parties present at the meeting says some ANC members fought back after being asked to leave the meeting.
DA chief whip in the metro, Werner Senekal was stabbed in the back during the altercation, while another DA councillor, Rano Kayser was hospitalized as the house went hotter.
Describing the scenario as such that undermined democracy, James Selfe, chairperson of DA federal council and shadow minister of correctional service said the outburst at the metro council meeting exposed ANC’s true colours as a lawless party.
“The ANC cannot accept its electoral defeat at the hands of the DA in the major Metros, and has nothing left to offer but chaos and disorder. The conduct of the ANC today was a disgrace,” he said.
The DA claimed that the ANC councilors threw glasses and missiles across the council chamber, and threatened violence against the Speaker of Council while approaching the Speaker’s bench violently.
The party went on to recount how the ANC caucus alongside its party alliance ruined the council meeting for long in Johannesburg and in Tshwane, saying the ANC had through SAMWU members breached the Sammy Marks chamber building violently and aggressively.
“It is clear that in Johannesburg the caucus of Cllr Parks Tau is nothing more than a band of thugs and hooligans, who have no concern for the people of Johannesburg whom council must serve,” Selfe stated.
“Undeterred, the agenda of the day in Nelson Mandela Bay metro council meeting has been fully completed and all items have been voted on. In Johannesburg, Mayor Herman Mashaba has committed to completing the full agenda of council today, no matter how long the sitting extends. In Tshwane, Mayor Solly Msimanga has also committed to getting through every agenda item today and the council sitting is ongoing,” he added.

“The ANC must accept that it has been democratically voted out in Nelson Mandela Bay, Johannesburg and Tshwane, and no amount of violence will change that,” the DA lashed out adding that the ANC, through its undemocratic conduct, is reinforcing just why South Africa spoke up so loudly and clearly against it on 3 August 2016.
