ANC Names Its Mayoral Candidates For 2016 Elections


The ANC has announced its release of the long-awaited list of its mayoral candidates for the 2016 local government elections.

The Party’s secretary General confirmed this announcement saying the party chose to announce its list so that candidates could assist in campaigns.

The party managed to release its list of mayoral candidates for the year’s election after several hours of deliberation by the party’s National Executive Committee in Tshwane on Saturday evening.

Few changes on which candidate contests for which municipality were made. For instance, the party picked Parks Tau to be the mayoral candidate for Johannesburg.

Meanwhile, in Ekurhuleni, Mayor Mondli Gungubele was replaced by Mzwandile Masina as the party candidate while Mayor Danny Jordaan is maintained as the party’s mayoral candidate in Nelson Mandela Bay.

Part of the ANC’s announcement of mayoral candidates included areas where Gwede Mantashe explained to be “geo-political locations; growth and development trajectory and economic achievement among others.”

He however explained that the party is yet to finalize its decision of candidate for places like Tshwane metro where several party members had expressed dissatisfaction with its candidates list

“We explained to the respective Provincial Executive Committees (PEC) to go back and do something different, ” Mantashe told journalists.

“We gave them (the Northern Cape) three strategic municipalities namely Kimberley, Upington and Springbok and we have given them a week to look and finalize the names there,” Mantashe explained as candidates with criminal convictions or pending cases were not considered.

“We should not use the case of innocence until proven guilty because we may face a situation where that comrade is asked to step aside as mayor.”

ANC’s Mantashe went on to say that the selection of the party candidates were done strictly following guidelines that were set in its resolution during the Polokwane national conference.

“In selection of the leadership, we must ensure there is an elective government and gender parity… As we appoint mayors we need to ensure that we improving the skills profile of an individual,” he said.

Xolani Sotashe for Cape Town Metro
