There Will Be Crisis If Zuma Refuses To Handover To Ramaphosa – Gwede Mantashe

ANC December Conference – The general secretary of the African National Congress (ANC), Gwede Mantashe has warned that there will be a crisis if the current president of the party, Jacob Zuma refuses to hand over to his deputy, Cyril Ramaphosa.

He said the theory of a woman president for ANC is strange and, that the party would be owed an explanation if the sitting deputy president fails to take over from the incumbent president.

The ANC general secretary made the remarks while he was speaking at OR Tambo lecture held at KwaNokuthula Hall in Plettenberg Bay.

He called for the renewal of the ANC and expressed that the party will survive if it emulates President OR Tambo.

“As we approach the December Conference, we must renew the ANC so that it stands the test of time. If ANC emulates President OR Tambo, it will survive.”

Mantashe urged members of the ruling party to work towards keeping the party together even after the ANC December Conference.

“Every member of the ANC is a guardian of unity. It is not healthy for spats between the Alliance. Unity of the Alliance will be based on principle,” he said and stressed that any President of the party ought to be incorruptible in politics and in personal life.

“A leader must show a high sense of responsibility, respect opinions of others and listen to suggestions of masses even if (he) don’t agree with (them).”

Furthermore, the general secretary encouraged youth to quest for positive changes. “It is the duty of young people to insist on change. An organisation should be able to adapt to a new environment that is emerging to survive. I put this as an idea, I said branches must debate this idea. In the interests of the ANC, succession must be managed.

“If President Zuma, with experience, refuses to handover to DP, we will be in a crisis. Let us find a woman to be the DP, for sucession to be managed. When succession is not managed properly, results become disastrous.”

He affirmed it’s ideal for the ANC leadership to manage succession. “We can’t have accidental leadership succession… There’s a theory of a woman President. That’s starange. We want a President of the ANV, male or female,” he stated.
