An internationally renowned African music icon Papa Wemba who is of Congolese decent has kicked the bucket. The incident took place after the artist reportedly collapsed on stage during a performance at a music festival in Ivory Coast.

BuzzSouthAfrica gathered that the 66-year-old musician suddenly collapsed at the Urban Music Festival in Ivory Coast on Saturday night while thrilling his numerous fans during a performance.

The organisers of the music festival released a statement which confirmed his death, thereby spreading news of the loss of music icon Papa Wemba. The news was of the death of the internationally renowned music icon was all over the social media on Sunday.

Popularly known as “King of Rhumba Rock” in Congo and around the world, Papa Wemba through his flamboyant personality and artistic skills rose to stardom through his amazing skills of fusing African heritage and culture with Western pop‚ rap and rock music.

Apart from being a music icon, Papa Wemba was also a fashion icon who was the brain behind the flamboyant Sapeur fashion‚ which is made up of three-piece suits‚ shiny black leather shoes and a lot of flashy accessories which has become the next big thing in popular fashion trend.

With news of the music legend’s death spreading like wildfire on the internet, condolence messages are streaming in from fans all over the world on the social media.

The road to fame and prominence for Papa Wemba kicked off when he joined the music group Zaiko Langa Langa. He later defined his success as a founding member of both Isifi Lokole and then Yoka Lokole.
