Veteran actress and former Generations star Mary Makgatho has passed on.
While friends have started posting Rest In Peace messages for the actress on social media, the sad news was confirmed by the family on Monday morning. The actress reportedly died after complications from a fall in July.
Her casting manager‚ Carlynn de Waal-Smit confirmed to TshisaLIVE that Makgatho died after spending a few weeks in the hospital as a result of the fatal fall.
“It’s true I just got off the phone with her sister Rose‚ who confirmed that she passed away. Mary was admitted into high care on 10 July after injuring herself after she fell‚” she said.
Tributes have been pouring in for the veteran who entertained many with her talent on the small screen
Subsequently, Minister of Arts and Culture Nathi Mthethwa who seems to be close to the late actress took to Twitter to extend his condolences to her family.
“I’d like to extend my heartfelt condolences to the loved ones of veteran Actress and my dear friend Mary Makgatho‚ who has sadly passed on‚” he said.
Makgatho was known for her appearances in Yizo Yizo‚ Generations‚ Rhythm City and e.tv’s eKasi: Our Stories. One of Mary’s recent films was the movie Meet The Radebe’s produced by actress and producer Sonia Mbele.
Mary Makgatho, who played the emotional and erratic Connie on Rhythm City made her debut on the soap in 2008. Though not very regular, her role on the soapie never dies and was always making a comeback after being out of the script for months.
Meanwhile, Makgatho’s death means Rhythm city has been hit twice by death within a few days. The soapie’s star Dumi Masilela who was shot by hijackers will be laid to rest later this week. See details here.
