This might be the end of the road for award-winning SABC 2 soapie 7de Laan as the show’s contract with the public broadcaster has not been renewed for a new season.
The contract was sent to the SABC months ago, but it’s yet to be renewed. Therefore, there is no funding to run the show.
An insider from the company which produces 7de Laan – Danie Odendaal Productions, revealed that the production company has ran out of fund. In fact, they have been funding the production with their personal money for the past four months.
Thus, employees, including the cast and crew, were warned on Thursday morning not to expect any more salaries.
“We are still working at the production company right now. We have not downed tools. The environment in the office is quite sombre at the moment. But everything is quite normal, except for the fact that we are not going to get paid.”
While speculations are getting higher, the show’s line producer also confirmed that they are waiting for SABC to sign a contract. However, she didn’t specify the fate of the the new new season scheduled to begin on Monday.
“We have been running for about two and half months now. We don’t have a signed contract. We believe it’s still in progress. So yes, we are busy with the contract at the moment.”
Then she added;
“If there is no contract in place, it means we can’t invoice. So, you can read between the lines.”
The last few months has been tough for the soapie which lost several of main actors. The drastic changes on the show also affected its viewership figures.
Similarly, another popular SABC soapie, Muvhango is also having a difficult time with funding as a result of expired contract.
