This wouldn’t be the first time the ancient leader of Zimbabwe is rumored to be critically ill and about to die. If you recall, the 91-year-old president was in 2014, speculated to be bed-ridden, critically ill and even dead. To end the speculations, President Robert Mugabe who was 89 then had to make a public appearance after several weeks of absence to mourn the death of his 78-year-old sister Bridget. And as it happened, Mugabe was neither ill nor dead. The man was enjoying a two weeks annual leave in Singapore.
Last year, many anticipated the death of Mugabe when the Malawian prophet, Austin Liabunya divined that “Mugabe’s biological clock will not tick beyond this year”. Mugabe practically ignored the prophecy and even planned on how he’ll empower native Zimbabweans to control more than 50% of the foreign-owned company in the country in 2016. Guess what? he didn’t die, Robert Mugabe celebrated the new year.
Yet again, rumors are globally circulating that the man who has been occupying the number one position in Zimbabwe since 1980 is in critical condition. A western media outlet even related that based on reports from Africa, ” Robert Mugabe, the president of Zimbabwe, has collapsed with a heart attack…He was said to be on holiday with family and friends when he was taken ill,” the news platform related, and added that “high-level meetings are being held in case Mugabe does not recover.”
Although it was indicated that the reports aren’t authentic, BuzzSouthAfrica uncovered that an acting President has been running the affairs of the country since 24th December when Mugabe reportedly left for his annual leave. Vice President Emmerson Mnangagwa is currently the acting President of the country. He took over the position from Phelekezela Mphoko on the 11th of this month.
A statement signed by the principal directory in the ministry of Information, Media and Broadcasting Services, Regis Chikowore reads thus; Honorable Vice President Emmerson Mnangagwa is the Acting President of Zimbabwe in the absence of His Excellency the President, Cde R.G Mugabe, who is on his traditional annual vacation.”
Essentially, nobody can substantiate the credibility of the story about Mugabe collapsing and having a heart attack. But recent instances have indicated that the President’s health is unhealthy and are giving life to the rumors. Mugabe has increasingly missed his steps recently and even delivered a 25-minute-long speech through to the end without recognizing that it was the same speech he delivered the previous month.
