The African National Congress (ANC) has been greeted with another sexual assault case. The accused, Cde Tolly Mashamaite, is ANC Waterberg Regional Secretary. He appeared before the Mokopane Magistrate’s Court on Thursday on charges of rape and bribery.
Mashamaite was arrested on Tuesday, October 11, for allegedly raping a 23-year-old woman in the Park hotel in Mokopane on 5 April. The politician allegedly carried out the demeaning act with the young woman after she approached him for a job.
BuzzSouthAfrica learned that at the time of the incidence [In April], there was no substantial evidence to make an arrest but after a new evidence emerged, the ANC leader was nabbed. Hence, the reason for the delayed arrest.
In the course of the investigation, it was also found that the ANC Limpopo official tried to silence the young woman by offering her R400 bribe.
Reacting to the development, ANC Limpopo Secretary of the ANC, Nocks Seabi, said in a statement that the party has noted the arrests of Waterberg Regional Secretary, Cde Tolly Mashamaite on allegations of rape.
The statement added:
“The provincial leadership remains resolute in the fight against any form of woman abuse including sexual abuse and rape. The ANC once more confirms its confidence in the judicial system and encourage speedy resolution on the matter in the interest of justice. The ANC holds the principle of innocent until proven otherwise…”
Meanwhile, the ANC leader is currently out on bail after he was charged R1000 by Magistrate Shirley Tlowane. The Magistrate also referred the matter to the Mokopane Regional Court.
He is expected to appear in the aforementioned court on November 7 for a plea and a trial date.
Mashamaite’s arrest has been described as a political stunt by opposition groups. Little wonder, many ANC supporters showed him support when he appeared in court yesterday. A placard displayed by one of his supporters read: ‘He is not a rapist, but a leader’.
Nevertheless, we hope justice would be served in the case.
