Hot rapper and performer Gigi Lamayne released a #FeesMustFall single and video on Wednesday to commemorate her graduation from the University of the Witwatersrand with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Media and Anthropology.
Her graduation is no ordinary one as she made her country and her single mother proud by bagging 4 distinctions.
“Today I graduate at Wits university. My single mother struggled to see this day‚” the hit-maker tweeted.
She announced that after a crazy year filled with student protests at universities in the country demanding zero fee increases for 2016 and government subsidies to ensure free tertiary education, she was releasing a #FeesWillFall audio-visual at noon to coincide with her graduation.
In a statement made by her management company DreamTeam SA, the company boasted that Gigi Lamayne was not only graduating with four distinctions, she was also at the top of her class and will be awarded the Media Monitoring Africa Prize for her efforts.
“Gigi Lamayne is graduating with four distinctions and is also graduating as the top third-year Media Studies student‚ for which she will be awarded the Media Monitoring Africa Prize at a prize-giving ceremony on 14 April 2016‚” the company said in a statement.
“Gigi Lamayne hopes her achievements will inspire other young South Africans as well as young and upcoming musicians to take both their craft and education seriously.”
Despite being a four-time winner at the SA Hip-Hop Awards, Lamayne was virtually a backbencher in the mainstream until her Ice Cream remix featuring Khuli Chana
The different places in which she grew up in Joburg including Soweto‚ Eldorado Park and the cultural melting pot of Yeoville, helped in developing her street craft and talent. But this did not deviate her attention from her education.
She participated in contests with local MCs in England where she also spent part of her childhood England on a Branson Scholarship.

“I grew up in all these places because my mom was working as a nurse in the UK. My influences are varied‚ most importantly the places I lived in. But I have also been inspired by Bob Marley‚ Brenda Fassie and Tupac Shakur‚” she told reporters in an interview last year.
Gigi Lamayne plans to use her Wits degree to explore new forms of media to advance more in her music career.
