Reports have it that SA’s most wanted bank robber has been arrested.
The man earned his reputation as SA’s most wanted bank robber after he was linked to many bank robbery crimes committed in 2014 in Gauteng and Mpumalanga.
Confirming this, Hawks’ spokesperson – Brigadier Hangwani Mulaudzi disclosed that he was arrested by Crime Intelligence and Hawks officers at his Auckland Park home in Johannesburg on Tuesday.
Identifying the robber as Lucky Vusi Dube, Mulaudzi related that he was apprehended with 14 live rounds of ammunition for a handgun.
As it happened, members of the Crime Investigating outlet were led to the suspect’s house by another suspect who they arrested at Jabulani Hostel in connection with a robbery in Bramley.
Lucky Vusi Dube, street-named ‘Sthakathi’, is ‘linked to the robbery of Standard Bank in Balfour, Mpumalanga, Bidvest Bank in Randburg, ABSA Bank in Sandton, Absa Bank in Vereeniging, Nedbank in Johannesburg Central, as well as another ABSA Bank in Norkempark, Johannesburg.
He is also linked to the Nedbank robbery in Sandton in 2006 as well as a 2013 robbery in Vereeniging,” Mulaudzi said.
Sthakathi appeared before the Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court for possession of unlicensed ammunition. His case was however, postponed to May 6 to allow the verification of his status in the country.
“We are still in the process of verifying his address, status in the country and gathering all the necessary information linking him to these bank robberies.
We have been looking for this man for a long time. We were finally led to his whereabouts by one of his arrested associates. This is a major breakthrough and we are confident that the accused will face additional charges,” Mulaudzi remarked.
