Recent reports claim that SABC group executive Hlaudi Motsoeneng has expressed concern over the amount of money which producers of 7de Laan and Muvhango give their staff and actors.
Hlaudi saw the need to increase the amount of money producers are paying those working for them, saying it is below inflation. Thus, he allegedly met with the soapie bosses to express his concern over the issue.
SABC spokesperson Kaizer Kganyago confirmed this last week. According to Kganyago, Hlaudi had met with the producers to seek an increase on the amount given to actors and staff. Notwithstanding, the producers cannot be forced to effect such changes while paying their workers. It’s simply not in their power.
“The SABC cannot regulate increases. That is a matter between the production houses and the talent. The SABC raised the concern as an interested party in the matter,” Kganyago said.
when asked if the broadcaster would take disciplinary action against the producers if they fail to effect the changes, Kganyago explained that they have done their part by intervening. The rest is left for the production houses to decide on.
“We were simply raising a caution. We have intervened before, like with Generations, but we cannot pre-empt anything at the moment,” Kaizer said.
Apparently, SABC Group Executive Hlaudi is concerned that the SABC might need to intervene in the future if any dispute comes up between the producers and their talent. Thus, they have decided to prevent such occurrences by giving prior warning.
Notably, there’s no beef between the production houses and the SABC.
Just last month, the two shows suffered major setback as a result of late renewal of contracts with the state broadcaster. However, things seem to be working out just fine now.
