Free State Premier and ANC provincial chairman Ace Magashule has called on ministers who supported the move for Zuma’s removal, to resign or get ready to be forced out.
The province said this after serving ministers indicated their support for the President to step down following series of corruption charges against him.
The motion for Zuma to resign took many ANC leaders by surprise as Tourism Minister Derek Hanekom first moved the motion at the party’s national executive committee meeting at St Georges Hotel outside Pretoria on Saturday.
The motion which lasted till Monday was then supported by Health Minister Aaron Motsoaledi, his deputy Joe Phaahla, Rural Development deputy Minister Mcebisi Skwatsha and Public Works Minister Thulas Nxesi among many others.
To this, Magashule, a close Zuma supporter suggested that the ministers who are fighting against Zuma, should voluntarily resign from their positions in cabinet and the executive council or be kicked out as it would be difficult for them to serve under someone whom they have lost confidence in.
Speaking to top-ranked leaders in the ANC, Magashule said he had served under two ANC presidents – Nelson Mandela and Thabo Mbeki but has never come across a situation where ministers would push a motion of no confidence against someone who has appointed them.
He called on the president not to allow such a situation under his leadership and that he must remove those who supported the motion from his cabinet and the executive.
This suggestion was, however, frowned at by many ANC members, particularly the Zuma supporters like Sports Minister Fikile Mbalula and Small Business Minister Lindiwe Zulu.
The President on the other hand, said the move to have him removed from office is spearheaded by his enemies who want him jailed at all cost.
Addressing the ANC NEC, Zuma said he would not give in to his political enemies who have, since the Mbeki era, been planning to have him Jailed.
He said, – according to the NEC member who witnessed Zuma’s speech- that cases like Nkandla, corruption charges and the spy tapes were all masterminded by his relentless enemies.
