Following a fatal accident involving musician Ray Phiri, the police has launched an investigation of a case of culpable homicide to establish what actually happened.
Police confirmed on Friday that while the jazz musician was travelling near the N4 in Middleburg‚ Mpumalanga last Sunday, the car he was travelling in hit two pedestrians.
Hence, one pedestrian was confirmed dead on the spot while another was seriously injured. The injured victim is currently in a critical condition in the hospital. Ray was reportedly travelling to Mbombela from Johannesburg at the time of the accident.
Spokesperson, Joseph Mabuza said in a statement;
“There is an investigation into the matter to establish what occurred at the time and who is in the wrong. Whether there were any witnesses to the incident and whether the correct road markings were observed by all parties.”
In line with protocol in such incidents, Mabuza said that a charge of culpable homicide is being investigated. So far, investigations have revealed that the necessary road signs were not on the road at the time of the accident.
“It is terrible that this has happened and I don’t feel good about it at all. There should at least have been road signs to indicate a pedestrian crossing so motorists can drive more carefully‚ but there were none‚” Ray said.
Meanwhile, the musician is no stranger to fatal car accidents. The most fatal which happened in 2003 near Barberton‚ Mpumalanga claimed the life of his wife Daphney.
Nevertheless, several reports confirmed that the star recently tied the knots again in Venda. The wedding was celebrated in a private event. Ray Phiri, 69, reportedly tied the knots with his 24-year-old Venda sweetheart Rabelani Mulaudzi.
