Prior to her departure, the dress that Miss SA Ntando Kunene will be wearing when she represents the country at the Miss World pageant raised a lot of eyebrows.

The dress was supposedly depicting Mpumalanga’s famed sunshine received a lot of thumbs down from people.

When the beauty queen shared pictures of two of the dresses she’ll be taking with her to the global event in the US, more emphasis was on her national dress designed by JJ Schoeman which they said was inspired by her home province Mpumalanga.

The designer who is responsible for designing all her outfits decided to deviate from the traditional national dress. Skipping the usual animal prints and cultural references, he was able to come up with something entirely different from what we are used to seeing.

Keeping it simple, Schoeman drew inspiration for the dress from the province’s nickname‚ the place of the rising sun.

“The inspiration was quite simple. We tapped into Nthando and who she is and where she’s from. Mpumalanga is the place of the rising sun. If you think about our beautiful country we have beautiful sunrises. It’s usually a controversial piece because of our different cultures and who we are‚” he said.

While the pageant and some others were gushing over the dress, some fans including celebrities disagreed with the fact that the dress truly represents South Africa. They also see no connection to the Mpumalanga sunshine on the dress.

Well, let’s hope it doesn’t hinder her success at the competition.
