Telenovela Uzalo showing on SABC 1 has got a lot of noses wrinkling over the story line of a randy pastor who refuses to comply with accepted standards of morality.
Even more disturbing is the ‘Pastor Nkosi’ character on the show who seems to be obsessed with sex and stealing church money. Real life pastors are especially displeased with this character alleging that he makes them look bad.
“The Pastor Nkosi story line is painting the wrong picture of Christian pastors and Christianity as a whole,” Pastor Caleb Mbokazi of Inheritor’s Foundation Church of Christ told the local publication.
“I know the show is funded with a budget of millions but it’s clear those millions are used to painting us as bad people,” he added.
eThekwini Community Church Pastor Vusi Dube confessed that he was so affected by the Pastor Nkosi character that he feared to stand before his congregation. The pastor feared being compared to the immoral ways of the pastor in the Uzalo drama series.
“Many of us are angry. We don’t have a structure where we can voice our anger. I’m afraid even to stand in front of the congregation and preach or ask for offerings,” said Pastor Dube.
Meanwhile, Uzalo’s publicist, Koketso Phala reacted to the comments about the show. He maintained that the show was meant to entertain, and above all reflect what is happening in society. But never to get on anybody’s nerves.
“Uzalo is meant to entertain, that is the core focus of the show,” she said.
“But more importantly, it shows what is really happening out there. It is not to say all pastors are bad, but these things happen.”
