South African Police Service (SAPS) arrested two of its members who tried to prevent justice by soliciting bribery. They reportedly demanded of a suspect to oil their palms so that they could destroy the case against him.
BuzzSouthAfrica gathered that the two officers were investigating a case of theft of a tractor. But are now, charged with corruption and soliciting bribery.
SAPS in a media statement related that “a police Warrant Officer and his colleague, a Sergeant, who are stationed at Mangaung Detective Services will appear before the Hertzogville Magistrate’s Court today following their arrest…after they were caught in the act of soliciting a bribe.
…Instead of doing their duties by the book they approached the suspect and demanded R100 000 so that they could destroy the case.”
The suspect reportedly gave in to their demands and gave the officers R30 000, with a promise to settle the balance at a later date.
According to SAPS, the “Anti-Corruption unit of the Hawks got the information that the two officers were on their way to Hertzogville to collect the bribe money.
The police officers, who allegedly had used a state vehicle illegally for their shenanigans, were arrested at a bank, with R70 000 cash in their possession.”
Meanwhile, the Hawks in the Free State, in conjunction with Head Office Serious Organised Crime Unit and Crime Intelligence, arrested a 32 year old woman after she was found in possession of gold bearing material and more than one million cash in Welkom.
“Information was received that there was large sum of money as well as gold bearing material at a house in Diaas Street 4 Dagbreek.
When officers arrived at the house they found a woman and upon executing the search warrant, a 50kg of gold bearing material, gold processing equipment’s as well as R1 082,400 in cash were found in the house.
The cash was hidden inside an old geyser next to the house. A vehicle Toyota D4D Fortuner and the cash were subsequently seized,” SAPS narrated and added that more arrests are eminent.
The suspect will also, appear before the Welkom Magistrate’s Court today. She’ll be facing charge of acquisition, possession and disposal of unwrought precious metal.
