DJ Zinhle is one of South Africa’s most celebrated DJs.
The South African DJ and actress has garnered notable fame over recent years for her mixes, her radio shows and her appearances on TV.
Dj Zinhle has been commended on her versatility as an artist and her ability to gain recognition through her hard work in a sect of entertainment that has very few women.
Due to her popularity, she has also become a frequent fixture on the South African entertainment scene as well as the celebrity news and rumor mill.
Her tumultuous relationship with South African rapper – AKA – has been the focus of many headlines in the entertainment world.
More than just a DJ, DJ Zinhle is a notable fashion icon, entrepreneur and mother.
Ntombezinhle Jiyane was born on the 30th of December, 1982 in Dannhauser. That puts DJ Zinhle’s current age at 32.
Before DJ Zinhle entered the music world in 2004, she attended Siyamukela High School in the KwaZulu-Natal province of South Africa.
She later went on to earn a National Diploma in Marketing from University of Johannesburg.
After university, she interned for a South African make up company.
Later, she began a career in marketing which advanced till she was a brand manager for South African Breweries.
Her love for dee-jaying and spinning was born by chance and developed by hard work.
She had never intended to become a DJ; however, her brother Zak had always had a deep love for music and had the habit of mixing vinyls to cope with stress. Eventually, he taught his sister how to mix as well.
Her first chance to perform for an audience was born when one of the DJs her brother hired for a gig was late and she stepped in to help.
Zinhle has two siblings, Zak – mentioned earlier and Gugu – her sister whom she had her Umemulo with.
Umemulo is a rite of passage in the Zulu Culture for females coming of age.
Now she is one of South Africa’s well regarded DJs that has gone on to perform all over the world. At home, she performs at fashion shows, in clubs, private parties and corporate functions.
DJ Zinhle, who believes in empowering women and seeing women in fields dominated by men, has opened her own music school – FUSE Academy – which trains young female Disc Jockeys.
The Firm Understanding of Sound Entertainment (FUSE) Academy is based in Newton, Johannesburg which is in South Africa’s Gauteng Province. The Fuse Academy was founded with DJ Zinhle’s close friend, Nomndeni Mdakhi.
She was once the resident DJ on Jika maJika – a music show on SABC1. She also maintained a set on Y-FM radio station.
She became the first female DJ to release a house compilation in South Africa.
Her hit song “My Name is”, which featured poet and musician – Busiswa, helped put her on the path of international fame.
As an actress, DJ Zinhle has appeared in several TV shows including ‘Rhythm City’ where she played Faniswa and ‘Ekasi: Our Stories’ where she played the lead role of Thuli.
She has also appeared in several reality shows including Tropika Island of Treasure and Turn It Out 2.
As a DJ, she started out by mixing vniyls which still favored by many South African DJs and DJs all around the world.
As time evolved, she began to incorporate CD mixing into her sets. She now mixes both effortlessly during her performances and shows.
DJ Zinhle and AKA’s relationship is definitely one for the books. They gained the status of one of South Africa’s power couples while they were together.
You may not know the name Kiernan Jarryd Forbes, but you’ve probably heard of his stage name –AKA. AKA is a famous South African rapper who gained fame with hits like ‘Do It’, ‘Mistakes’ and ‘In My Walk’.
AKA was born in Cape Town on the 28th of January, 1988.
He is also the father of DJ Zinhle’s daughter Kairo Owethu Forbes who was born on the 8th of July, 2015.
The couple were reportedly together for three years before their relationship fell apart. Their relationship ended just a month after their daughter was born.
AKA is currently in a relationship with South African radio personality and television host, Bonang Matheba.
